Charity Overview

Charity overview

Golang Education Outreach was established in 2002 with a vision to uplift and enhance the educational journeys of under-privileged and vulnerable children. The Outreach is based in Honeydew in the Emthonjeni Community Centre, mainly serving the people living in the informal settlement of Zandspruit - an over-populated area of about 13,500 families, plagued by high unemployment and a shortage of basic services. The settlement is currently served by only one primary school.

For the Outreach to achieve its vision most effectively, involvement in children’s lives needs to be started at an early age and continue until adulthood. This involvement also needs to be relationship-based and holistic in character. This means that there are no hand-outs without the opportunity of building into a child’s life and that, as far as possible, we aim to change and develop all the aspects of a child’s life (- delete and not just give food and clothing). We want to free our children from being dependent on others by equipping and encouraging them with life skills.

Golang is registered as a non-profit organisation (NPO 094-462) and as a PBO (Public Benefit Organisation) under Section 18A.

The following key programmes are being managed at Golang:

Pre-school: The pre-school accommodates 40 children. The pre-school follows the “Play-with-a-Purpose” curriculum. The children receive two meals per day (a fortified porridge in the morning and a cooked meal in the afternoons).

Kids Club: The Kids Club accommodates around 220 children (Grade 1 - 7) in the afternoons, five days a week. The Kids Club offers extra-mural activities such as netball, soccer, boxing, choir, dancing, art and tutoring in maths and reading. It also offers a life-skills and spiritual programme on a weekly basis. The children also receive two meals a day (a fortified porridge in the morning and a cooked meal in the afternoons).

High School Youth Program: 82 high school children currently attend the program on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The children do leadership courses, Heartlines, life-skills, tutoring, youth camps, etc.

Golang also offers tutoring support (maths and reading) to the local government school, counselling where necessary, and ongoing staff training.

Resources needed

Our greatest concern for the current year is ensuring we are able to maintain our current staff complement of 16 people (95% of our staff live in the Zandspruit Settlement). Our staff receive a minimal amount for the dedicated and vital service they provide to the under-privileged and vulnerable children at Golang.

We are also in dire need of the following items:

• Sports equipment such as soccer balls, netballs, boxing bags, gloves and headgear;
• Large catering pots;
• Container or shed for tutoring purposes;
• A working computer and printer.

Golang is currently only serving a small portion of the children in the community, especially pre-school children. The waiting list for the pre-school is very long (currently in excess of 100) and in order to accommodate more children we need extra containers (the pre-school is currently run from two containers) as well as the added expense of employing extra teachers. It is our hope that one day we will be able to have an impact on more children’s lives than we currently have.

Should you wish to contribute to our cause, we would like to thank you in advance for helping to make a difference in the lives of the under-privileged and vulnerable children of the Zandspruit community.
